Phenibut verstärkt die GABAerge Inhibition über GABA-B-Rezeptoren. In Kombination mit Opioiden entsteht eine additive Hemmung des Atemzentrums. Die verzögerte Wirkung von Phenibut kann zu einer Fehleinschätzung des Wirkungszeitpunkts führen.
